Are you really living life?
Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
– The 14th Dalai Lama
How do you feel about your life today? Are you living every day in exuberance? Are you looking forward to what’s coming up next? Do you wish you had more time? Do you wish you had more love?
In the past years of my life, I kept asking myself if I am really living every moment of my life with excitement and if I am being honest with myself. It’s very hard to keep the flag flying when we have to face life’s choices, on what not to do, how to best avoid regret and guilt but in the same time try “live life to the fullest” – but no one said that it’s impossible.
What you need to understand is that everything holding you to a life you don’t want to live is a prison created by your own mind. That doesn’t mean you can just wish yourself into a new life, but it does mean that you can actively work towards living life to the fullest.
So instead of making any kind of New Year’s resolution at the end of every year, I told myself that I am going to make the MOST effort to do the things that matter to me each day; spend as much time as I possibly can with the people I love, go running on the beach, READ more books each month, be positive, help others, be kind and capitalize on this insane, nonsensical, beautiful, fleeting gift of life. No one will be there to check off society’s expectations of your life at the end, and there is no last call. Do the things that matter to you, and if you don’t know what that is yet, search it out! There is no right or wrong. You are the only person viewing the movie that is your life. You decide its plot, even though you cannot decide its ending.
Recognize that life is a journey, not a destination. This saying is such a cliche, but it’s also true; life is as much about how you get where you’re going as where you go. Living your life to the fullest is a process that will take you your whole life to develop. Make the best of it!
So now ask yourself one last question: are you really living life or are you just paying bills until the day you die? You’re a good person, aren’t you? Here. These are your dreams. Please take them! I know you panic sometimes. Sweat. Chill. Fever. It’s as if you were sick. But you’re… healthy. As if you were famished. But you’re… bloated. As if you were hollow. But you’re… full.
What the hell? It doesn’t make sense. What went wrong?
Nothing. You must surrender. To the necessity of love. For that is the spark. Which kindles life into an inferno. That is what creates your own dreams. Your own thoughts. Your own emotions. When you are willing to be consumed, right down to dust, in the struggle, the quest, the hunt, for what is worthy, great, noble, enduring, beautiful. That is what it means to LIVE.
SEIZE YOUR DAYS! They are yours and only yours alone, and you have no idea how very few of them you have to make your dreams reality.
Today I am living my life to the fullest. I am wearing white shorts, boots and a hat if I want to… I am walking down the streets with no direction. I am smiling and I am placing my hand over my chest to feel that beat! I am alive and I want to get everything I possibly can from life today. You should try the same… just do it!
